What is a Matelasse?

Matelasse is a French term for “quilted” and refers to a method of weaving fabric that appears to be quilted.  It is often produced on a jacquard loom, and threads from the front and back layer are interwoven to create a tone-on-tone pattern.  This weaving technique creates a fabric that looks thicker and appears to have batting between the layers; however, it does not.  Matelasse fabrics are most often seen in bedspreads or coverlets.  The woven designs include  floral, damask, and geometric patterns.  Matelasses can be mixed with any décor.  They can look chic, traditional, or tropical depending on the color and pattern.  Traditionally made in white, they are available in a rainbow of colors today.  Check out our Matelasse items below!
